Born to a military family, W. Clark Whitehorn has lived in Maryland, Indiana, Kwajalein, California, South Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, British Columbia, Nebraska, Montana, and New Mexico. Wanting to see the ocean, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1986 and served in San Pedro, California, and Charleston, South Carolina.

Clark’s love of travel resulted in a keen interest in the history and cultures of the Americas and a passion for books. After completing his four-year enlistment in the USCG, he returned to the Mountain West to earn a masters and PhD in environmental history at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

He began his career in publishing at the University of Nebraska Press in 1996 where he acquired books in the fields of sustainable agriculture, Western history, ethnic studies, natural history and Latin American studies. He next served as publications director at the Montana Historical Society and then became editor-in-chief at the University of New Mexico Press. He is currently executive editor for Bison Books at the University of Nebraska Press.

An avid outdoorsman, Clark spends as much time as possible outside with his wife, author and historian Charlene Porsild, and son, Noah Whitehorn, who will be a junior at Montana State University.
